What to See in Japan

Anyone who attempts to buttonhole Japan’s myriad attractions in a blithe sentence or two is making a serious mistake. From exotic temples to glass-and-steel cathedrals dedicated to consumerism, a lot more lies in between the two extremes in the Land of the Rising Sun. It goes without saying that Kyoto Toilet Museum might seem strange to westerners but for the Japanese it is a bone fide attraction. Shrines and royal palaces abound as do picturesque parks – not to be missed in spring for their almost surreally beautiful cherry blossom while in the more modern realm shrines to perhaps Japan’s biggest export – the motor car – are there to be explored in the shape of industrial museums. In Osaka you’ll be able to watch a movie on the largest IMAX screen in the world as well as visit one of the planet’s largest aquariums while Sapporo has seemingly never stopped its 1972 Winter Olympics party and is the place to be once the snow starts falling.
