Kita Ward is located in the northern areas of Kyoto City and is predominately a residential area. There are four universities situated within the ward limits thus thousands of university students inhabit the area. This large, lucrative market has brought about the opening of many businesses which cater for the student population. Nightlife, shopping and dining options are diverse yet typically aimed at younger crowds.
Kita Ward is home to a number of favourite tourist sites including the most iconic of all, Kinkaku-ji, the brilliant Golden Pavillion is resplendent in the daylight, majestic by night. Not far away is the Daitoku-ji, a complex of Zen temples and sub-temples surrounded by four immaculate gardens.
