Occupying the western limits of Kyoto City, Nishikyo Ward is separated from Ukyo ward by the Katsura River and has an area of roughly 59 square kilometres. The name translates as ‘west capital ward’ and it is home to a few of Kyoto’s oldest religious sites like Matsuo-taisha founded in 701, Shoji-ji Temple founded in 680 and Saiho-ji temple houses some of the oldest purely Japanese strolling gardens in existence.
Located just south of the Arashiyama district, Nishikyo has some areas of great natural beauty which can be explored by foot.
