Situated in the north-eastern corner of Kyoto prefecture, Sakyo Ward is home to some of Kyoto’s most iconic landmarks as well as some of its most secret treasures. The Silver Pavillion, Ginkaku-ji and the massive Nanzen-ji mark the northern and southern limits of the famous Philosopher’s Walk. A short sidetrack from the Walk will bring you to lesser known Honen-in, an oasis of tranquility compared to the tourist-heavy icons.
Being an area rich in ancient history much of the dining, shopping and entertainment in Sakyo Ward is of the traditional variety. You will find quaint tea houses and noodle eateries, tiny souvenir stores and shops selling handicrafts.
