With an area of only 6.82 sq.km., Shimogyo is one of the smallest of Kyoto’s eleven wards however what it may lack in size it makes up for in action. Shimogyo contains the city’s busiest shopping district, Shijō Kawaramachi plus two of modern Kyoto’s proudest landmarks; Kyoto Station is a colossal building with futuristic architecture housing a department store, hotel and shopping mall and Kyoto Tower looms 131 m. above the city offering the best views in town.
Shimogyo is not without its ancient treasures. The two Honganji Temples of the Jodo Shin-shu sect of Buddhism stand as massive reminders of Kyoto’s roots. There are also some interesting museums, a Japanese public bath and somewhere you can try on an authentic kimono.
