Ukyo
Everything you Need to Know about Ukyo - Kyoto
Occupying the western border of Kyoto, Ukyo Ward has a number of significant sites that you shouldn’t miss. The ward is home to the splendid Arashiyama district, an area that is famous for its maple tree covered hills which during the autumn explode into fierce colour. Japanese families enjoy hiking and picnicking in Arashiyama and the children love crossing the romantic Togetsu-kyo, or Bridge to the Moon, across the Oigawa River.
If Arashiyama is Ukyo’s scenic district, then Sagano is its historic one. Many important temples and shrines sit peacefully in compounds full of cherry blossoms, bamboo and maple trees.
Shopping, dining and entertainment in Ukyo more often has a traditional twist owing to the area’s long-standing role as a place to escape for the weekend.
